San Diego Pride Parade Applications Available Online

Cash Awards Offered for Best Parade Entries

Applications for this summer's 34th annual San Diego Pride parade are now available online. The mile-long parade is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., July 19, starting from University at Normal Street. It continues west to Sixth Avenue, then south to Ivy Lane. The 2008 theme is: "Live.Love.Be."

The online application process allows participants to fill out applications and pay entry fees electronically by visiting www.sandiegopride.org. Applications submitted by May 1 qualify for the lowest fees.

"In our ongoing effort to produce the parade for the spectators gathered along the rainbow mile as well as a television audience, the community can expect to a shorter parade that showcases our non-profit community, supportive businesses, and human rights messages, along with the traditional Pride parade flamboyance. Participating organizations are strongly encouraged to be creative and decorate floats that will get them noticed," said Pride Executive Director Ron deHarte. "To encourage more floats in the parade, unit fees for floats are being waived this year," he added.

The parade will be taped for television and aired on the Cox and Time Warner cable networks. Free parade shuttles will also be provided from two free park-n-ride lots located at the County Administration Building on Pacific Hwy and the Navy Hospital on Presidents Way.

Parade cash awards ranging from $150 to $1,000 will be given for "best entries" in several categories: best decorated float that captures this year's theme; most creative from a local business; best musical marching contingent and a mayor's award for the best out-of-town entry. All entries must be decorated and incorporate the 2008 theme on signage or through more elaborate ornamentation.

Additionally, non-profit organizations facing financial hardship are encouraged to apply, as San Diego Pride is offering discounted entry fees through its Parade Scholarship program on a space-available basis. Those organizations that desire financial assistance for entry fees are asked to write a letter explaining their situations and what fees they can afford.

Community leaders, entertainers and radio stations will emcee reviewing stands along the parade route. The Aging as Ourselves 50 and Better Cool Zone will return with a reviewing stand and a tented area for seniors.

Last year's parade last year attracted 150,000 spectators along its "rainbow mile" route that included 175 floats and contingents. It remains the largest civic event in San Diego and the largest Pride parade in Southern California.

The Pride office is located at 1807 Robinson St., Suite 106. For more information about parade applications, fees and 2008 events call (619) 297-7683, ext. 105, or visit the web site at www.sandiegopride.org.
